About our club

Club Facilities

We have exclusive use of no. 2 green at Hillsborough Park Bowling Club (HPBC), giving one full croquet lawn (35 yds x 28 yds), which we can divide into two half-size courts, as necessary.

This allows more members to play, and it also allows SCC to host both friendly and YCF league inter-club matches.   It is usual for two games to be played on a court at the same time which means that members do not have to wait to play.

Our members normally have use of the excellent Hillsborough pavilion facilities, where they can relax and enjoy a cup of tea between games.  During COVID-19 these are currently suspended, but the pavilion toilet facilities are open 9-5pm each day.

The typical croquet season runs from the first week in April to the end of September, but our members are able to keep playing croquet during October and, depending on weather conditions, during some of the winter months.

Club playing days

For 2020 - there are no 'club playing days'. The courts are available for practice and play via a court booking system, which allows us to effectively track and trace and monitor usage.

Equipment is sanitised before and after play.

Members are able to receive their own keys subject to a key deposit.

Typical club playing days are shown below.   Please check back here for more information, although members will be emailed with details of any changes:

Members are able to play at other times except when matches have been arranged or when the lawn is being maintained.  Dates of matches will be listed on the Club Notice Board, and we will let members know details of any planned maintenance.  Security arrangements at HPBC mean that a SCC key-holder must be present to open up and ensure that everything is locked at the end of play.

Check the website calendar for updates on lawn maintenance and club matches

We play both Golf Croquet and Association Croquet (AC), and coaching in both codes are available to members. Our members range from total beginners to those who travel and compete regularly in representative matches for county and national level.

For more details on the different codes of Croquet, go to More about Croquet or go to the Croquet Association website.

The University of Sheffield Croquet Society

The University of Sheffield Croquet society, which was formed in 2015, makes use of our facilities. For more information, visit their Facebook group.

Competitions and Tournaments

For those members who enjoy the competitive side of the game, we will be arranging a number of club competitions during the season for both new and experienced players.

In addition, we arrange matches against other clubs:

  • Golf Croquet: A number friendly matches against other clubs, and all members are encouraged to put their names down to play in these matches.
  • Golf Croquet: SCC enter a team in the Yorkshire Croquet Federation (YCF) Golf Croquet level play league.
  • Association Croquet: We also enter a team in the YCF Short-Lawn and Full Lawn Association Croquet handicap leagues. As we won the full lawn league last year, we are representing the YCF competing the national competition The Secretary's Shield, which we won in 2017 and 2018.
  • Tournaments: There are opportunities for all members to take part in GC & AC regional, and national tournaments.
